Laura’s eyes were still closed when she heard her mother’s scream.

Mrs. Mulligan glanced at her husband, then back to her daughter. “Laura, please don’t. There’s no need to risk hurting yourself.”

Katie looked up at her sister, then followed the direction of her long arm stretching into her index finger as she pointed straight ahead.

“You know that the only thing worse for me than being near a ledge is having someone I love on a ledge. Please back away from the cliff.”

The Mulligans arrived at their hotel during sunset only to find that their reservation was not in the system.
