The word “travel” comes from the word “travail”, which is French for “work”. Though this may not make as much sense today, in a world where roads were not maintained, lit, or even created, traveling was in fact synonymous with work. Journeys were dangerous, both in length of time, terrain, and possibility of attack. When you talk about travelling, don’t forget to be grateful for the ease with which we are able to do that today: that it is now synonymous with leisure and learning, with cultural growth and opportunity.
